TikTok’s #TikTokShortFilm competition is back for the third year, now open to creators in the US. TikTok, a unique platform that brings together creators, artists, filmmakers, and cinema enthusiasts, celebrates creativity as the Official Partner of Festival de Cannes (@festivaldecannes).
From February 21 to March 15, 2024, creators are invited to submit their original 1-minute+ videos in TikTok’s signature vertical format using the hashtags #TikTokShortFilm and #TikTokShortFilmCompetition. This competition, open to over 55 countries, provides an opportunity for creators to showcase their short films and reach an audience of over 1 billion people worldwide.
The competition features three categories: Grand Gagnant, Best Script, and Best Directing. Winners, selected by a distinguished panel of judges, will be invited to present their work and receive prizes at the #TikTokShortFilm ceremony during the 77th edition of the Festival de Cannes in Cannes, France. The Grand Winner will receive a cash prize of 10,000€, while winners of the Best Script and Best Directing categories will each receive 5,000€ to support their next creative projects.
TikTok has become a launchpad for filmmakers globally, with the #TikTokShortFilm community growing significantly over the past year. More than 2 million videos with the hashtag have been created, showcasing a 180% increase from 2022. Past winners, such as Madalena Aragao, Lucas Millions Dutra, Claudia Cochet, Shinichiro Ueda, and Matej Rimanić, have turned their passion into new career opportunities, gaining recognition and success in the entertainment industry.
The platform offers a new window to the world of cinema, allowing creatives, entertainment enthusiasts, and industry insiders to connect with a global community. Notable actors like Anthony Hopkins, Eva Longoria, Lupita Nyong’o, and Reese Witherspoon engage with fans on TikTok, sharing behind-the-scenes moments and glimpses into their lives.
TikTok has also become a hub for cinematic trends, as seen with the FilmTok community’s response to “Saltburn.” The film, starring Barry Keoghan and Jacob Elordi, gained attention with over 160k posts using #SaltBurn, increasing streaming viewership and even receiving a shoutout from Jacob Elordi while hosting Saturday Night Live.
